We believe the poor are the "light to the nations," the ones who invite us to conversion and salvation. To turn away from their suffering and to neglect their cries is to fail to hear the Gospel or to know Jesus, who told us in the parable of the last judgment in Matthew 25 that he has gone before us into the poor, the hungry, the thirsty, the naked and the stranger, and that is where we must find him and serve him.
